Secret Service Agent to Speak at Eureka College Oct. 4
Eureka College graduate to discuss his career, Reagan's impact on his life
A Eureka College graduate who now is a special agent with the United States Secret Service will speak at Eureka College Oct. 4. William Wind's 7:30 p.m. presentation is part of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Speakers Series to celebrate the 100th anniversary of alumnus Ronald Reagan's birth next year. Wind is a 1993 graduate and former Ronald Reagan Fellow at Eureka College. He works in the Recruiting Division of the Human Resources and Training office of the Secret Service, Washington, D.C. He has been employed at the Secret Service since 1997.
From 2006 to this year, Wind served in the Dignitary Protective Division, Washington, D.C. He first was assigned to the detail of the Secretary of Treasury. He later served in the Vice Presidential Protective Division, where as No. 1 Whip on his shift, he led administrative and protection duties, including coordinating the movements of the agents protecting the vice president.
During the 2000 presidential campaign, he was assigned to the details of presidential candidate Bill Bradley and vice presidential nominee Joseph Lieberman.
In his presentation, Wind will draw from his career and his college experiences to discuss the role of true leaders, who, Wind said "understands they are a servant for the group they serve and the individuals they lead."
"A leader is not always in the spotlight," he said. "At times, the leader will be faced with performing the mundane tasks without any recognition, and it is during these periods when true leadership is exposed – will they perform the task to their maximum or just adequately?" Wind said without the leadership and educational opportunities offered to him as a fellow in Eureka College's Reagan Leadership Program, "I don't believe I would be where I am today."
"I did not want to pass up this opportunity to return to campus to speak, revisit all my memories and all the people who became a part of my life and tell Eureka College and the Reagan Program ‘thank you' for all it prepared me for and what it gave to me and my family."
As a Eureka College student, Wind was president of Habitat for Humanity and was a member of the Student Foundation, the PRIDE campus service organization, the track team and the homecoming court. He was a photographer for campus events. He was selected for Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, the senior biology award and the Burrus Dickinson journalism award. He was selected as the Lincoln Academy of Illinois Student Laureate from the senior class. He was active in helping bring Native American leaders to speak in the area.
Throughout the 2010-2011 academic year, Eureka College will honor Ronald Reagan's legacy of servant-leadership by hosting speakers who themselves are servant-leaders, said Eureka College President J. David Arnold. "As Reagan embraced and lived the values of excellence in learning, service and leadership that are at the core of Eureka's mission, so, too, do the various individuals who will speak about their own careers and how Reagan has influenced them," Arnold said.
Other speakers in the series will include:
Oct. 25 - Carrie Thompson Wolf, a 1994 graduate and former Reagan Fellow, will discuss her role as an assistant parliamentarian for the U.S. House of Representatives.
Nov. 1 - George Leal, a 1992 graduate and former Reagan Fellow, will discuss his work as an assistant United States attorney for the western district of Texas El Paso, division.
Speakers who will be scheduled for winter and spring dates will include:
Joanne Drake, Director of the Reagan Presidential Foundation and former chief of staff of Reagan's California office, will give a behind-the-scenes look at the Reagans' daily lives.
Charles Lee, Director of the Information Division of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office, will discuss Reagan's ties to freedom and democracy throughout the world.
Jay Hein, a 1987 Eureka College graduate, former Reagan Fellow and former director of the White House Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives during the George W. Bush administration, will discuss Reagan's impact on his life and his role as president of the Sagamore Institute, an Indianapolis-based public policy think tank.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - Eureka College's Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration will honor an outstanding alumnus and servant leader Ronald Reagan on the centennial of his birth, Feb. 6, 2011, and celebrate the achievements of Eureka College for its heritage and legacy of creating servant-leaders. Reagan graduated from Eureka College in 1932. He returned to the campus 12 times and served three six-year terms on the Board of Trustees.
