Assistant U.S. Attorney to Speak Nov. 1 at Eureka College
November 1 - 7:30 pm - Cerf Center
A Eureka College graduate and former Ronald Reagan Fellow will discuss how his college experiences prepared him for a career as a servant-leader.
George Leal, an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas, El Paso Division, will speak Nov. 1.
The presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Cerf Center. It is part of the Ronald W. Reagan Centennial Speakers Series to celebrate the 100th anniversary of alumnus Ronald Reagan’s birth next year. For reservations, call (309) 467-6420.
George Leal, a 1992 graduate, will discuss in part how his parents, who originally were from Mexico, instilled in their seven children the value of education.
“My parents were allowed the privilege of coming to the United States to make a better life for themselves and their family,” Leal said. “Our responsibility, however, is not just to make a better life for ourselves. My career as a prosecutor has not only enabled me to show others what education, commitment to excellence and hard work can do. It has also enabled me to show others that we do not get where we are by ourselves. Many people help us along the way. We should not be ashamed to accept help, we should not take our gifts for granted and we should be willing to help others do even better than we have.”
Leal is a prosecutor in the Major Drug Unit. He formerly was an assistant criminal district attorney in two Texas counties.
As a Eureka College student, Leal was a member of Student Senate, Greek Council, theater productions, Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity, Alpha Chi national honor society, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and was Junior of the Year. He was a Harry S. Truman Scholar for commitment to public service, record of leadership and likelihood of success in graduate school. He received a bachelor’s degree in history and a doctor of jurisprudence degree from Texas Tech University School of Law.
Throughout the 2010-2011 academic year, Eureka College will honor Ronald Reagan’s legacy of servant-leadership by hosting speakers who themselves are servant-leaders, said Eureka College President J. David Arnold. “As Reagan embraced and lived the values of excellence in learning, service and leadership that are at the core of Eureka’s mission, so, too, do the various individuals who will speak about their own careers and how Reagan has influenced them,” Arnold said.
Speakers who will be scheduled for winter and spring dates will include:
Joanne Drake, Director of the Reagan Presidential Foundation and former chief of staff of Reagan’s California office, will give a behind-the-scenes look at the Reagans’ daily lives.
Charles Lee, Director of the Information Division of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office, will discuss Reagan’s ties to freedom and democracy throughout the world.
Jay Hein, a 1987 Eureka College graduate, former Reagan Fellow and former director of the White House Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives during the George W. Bush administration, will discuss Reagan’s impact on his life and his role as president of the Sagamore Institute, an Indianapolis-based public policy think tank.
