U.S. House Assistant Parliamentarian to Speak at Eureka College Oct. 25

Eureka College graduate to discuss lessons in public service

A Eureka College graduate who now is an assistant parliamentarian for the U.S. House of Representatives will speak at Eureka College Oct. 25. Carrie Thompson Wolf's 7:30 p.m. presentation is part of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Speakers Series to celebrate the 100th anniversary of alumnus Ronald Reagan's birth next year. The free presentation will be in the Cerf Center. For reservations, call (309) 467-6420.

In her presentation, Wolf will provide her perspective on the benefits of public service. "I hope current students might take away a greater understanding of how their undergraduate education and experiences will play a critical role in shaping their future contributions to society," Wolf said.

Wolf is a 1994 graduate and former Reagan Fellow at Eureka College.

Wolf is among six attorneys in a nonpartisan office that provides advice regarding the rules and precedents governing procedures in the House to its presiding officers, members, committees and staff.  Her duties include advising the presiding officer on procedural matters while the House is in session, referral of introduced measures to the appropriate committee on behalf of the Speaker and drafting and compiling the precedents of the House for both internal use and for formal publication.

Throughout the 2010-2011 academic year, Eureka College will honor Ronald Reagan's legacy of servant-leadership by hosting speakers who themselves are servant-leaders, said Eureka College President J. David Arnold. "As Reagan embraced and lived the values of excellence in learning, service and leadership that are at the core of Eureka's mission, so, too, do the various individuals who will speak about their own careers and how Reagan has influenced them," Arnold said.

Other speakers in the series will include:

Nov. 1 - George Leal, a 1992 graduate and former Reagan Fellow, will discuss his work as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas, El Paso Division.

Speakers who will be scheduled for winter and spring dates will include:

Joanne Drake, Director of the Reagan Presidential Foundation and former chief of staff of Reagan's California office, will give a behind-the-scenes look at the Reagans' daily lives.

Charles Lee, Director of the Information Division of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office, will discuss Reagan's ties to freedom and democracy throughout the world.

Jay Hein, a 1987 Eureka College graduate, former Reagan Fellow and former director of the White House Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives during the George W. Bush administration, will discuss Reagan's impact on his life and his role as president of the Sagamore Institute, an Indianapolis-based public policy think tank.
