centennial series

Ronald Reagan's very foundations are deeply rooted in the midwest of Ameria - specifically in the mores and values of Central Illinois. Born in Tampico, Illinois - a small town on the historic Hennepin Canal and moving from town to town until finally landing in Eureka College for his college years, Ronald Reagan learned to adapt and adjust to new friends - and to believe in himself and his family above all else.

At Eureka College, "Everything that has been good in my life began here." Studying the cultural context within which Reagan was immersed before he headed to movie stardom in California, is central to understanding who Reagan was - where he developed his beliefs and convictions - and how he applied them as a man, son, husband, friend, collegue, leader, president, and alum.

Reagan Centennial Speakers - Paying it Forward

Willie Wind & George Leal

William Wind, left, and George Leal are shown at Old Ebbitt's Grill in Washington, D.C. last May. They became friends at Eureka College as Reagan Scholars in the late 1980s. (For The Pantagraph)

EUREKA — George Leal’s parents moved to Texas from Mexico to work in the cotton fields. They gave him a choice of going to school, or looking forward to a life of sweaty labor.

William Wind is a full-blooded Creek Indian who grew up in a small town near Tulsa, Okla. His parents never spoke English, but encouraged their sons to pursue an education.

Their paths crossed in the late 1980s at Eureka College, each a recipient of a Ronald Reagan Fellowship. Leal, a 1992 graduate, is now an assistant U.S. attorney, prosecuting major drug cases along the Mexican border.

Recently, both men were invited back to Eureka College to speak as part of the

Ronald Reagan Centennial Speakers Series to celebrate the 100th anniversary of alumnus Ronald Reagan’s birth next year. Read more in The Pantagraph >
